We have been making and selling cotton yoga mats since 2014.
Teaching yoga classes for Virgin Active, often the question would come up: “I would really like to get into yoga. What kind of mat do I buy?”. Most new-to-yoga students would then rock up next class with a standard PVC yoga or exercise mat, which usually lasts a few months, maybe a year to then be discarded and respaced by another PVC mat.
Our intention was not to start a business but to design a practice mat that works, lasts and is not shipped around the planet but made here in South Africa using natural materials. Our dream was to design a yoga mat, that is conscious, functional, practical, indestructible and at the same time alive and beautiful.
So we started playing with materials, production techniques, sizes and shapes. It took a year of prototyping and fine-tuning to arrive at our own unique re- interpretation of the traditional all-natural cotton yoga mat. And it turned out to be so good, that we changed nothing since, no matter how much we seek to evolve and optimize.
We notice that magic happens when people get together to make something with hands and hearts. It feels as if each mat is unique and alive with the love, care and presence that went into each individual production process. An aliveness that no machine can produce.
When we sold our 100th mat without label, logo, name, advertising, anything really, we decided that it was time to reach a broader audience. It was time to reach beyond our yoga classes and word of mouth.
The best way to prepare for any future is to be fully present with the here and now.
